Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.
There are times when blatant heart string movies are insulting with how desperately they attempt to hook your emotions. And then there are times when they are done just right and even though the movie is beyond predictable and formula, it is an excellent watch. I felt like Gifted is much more of the latter. They got me very invested in the story and characters. They did a great job of showing how family should be even if it wasn't an ideal situation.
I very much enjoyed this movie and recommend people check it out. It's a great character drama about doing the right thing and listening to your heart.
