After being harrased by a school bully, two teenagers hire a former soldier of fortune (Owen Wilson) as a bodyguard, only to find out that he has his own agenda.
This is totally one of those movies that you've essentially seen by watching the preview. You know that the bodyguard guy is only trying to take advantage of the bullied kids and will eventually have a change of heart and actually ended up taking care of them. There was nothing special whatsoever. There were a couple of pretty good laughs, but that was pretty much it. I remember when Owen Wilson used to be totally hilarious on sight. He has fallen quite a long way. The bullied kids totally carried this movie and if it wasn't for them this would have been horrid.
I wouldn't really recommend anyone rushing to check this out. It might sort of be worth renting, but could completely wait until cable.
Vantage Point
In Vantage Point, eight strangers with eight different points of view try to unlock the one truth behind an assassination attempt on the president of the United States. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Mathew Fox) are two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton (William Hurt) at a summit on the global war on terror. When President Ashton is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and lives collide in the hunt for the assassin. In the crowd is Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker), an American tourist who thinks he’s captured the shooter on his camcorder while videotaping the event for his kids back home. Also there, relaying the historic event to millions of TV viewers across the globe, is American TV news producer Rex Brooks (Sigourney Weaver). As they and others reveal their stories the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.
This movie was awesome. It reminded me a lot of the show Lost (GREATEST SHOW ON TV, PEOPLE!) when it first started. The first couple of episodes started telling how what was going on with each character when the plane went down. This movie had the same sort of storytelling going on. It would start at the summit and go to a certain point through someone's point of view and then fade out and go back to the summit and start from someone else's point of view. Every time they did it - the story went a little bit further. The movie was so intense though that every time it faded out I was having a bitch fit because I was dying to see where it was going to go. It ended up being totally worth the wait though to see how it all played out. The suspense in this movie was beyond perfection. This was a true edge of your seat thriller and totally matched the expectations I had for the movie from the kick a$$ trailer for it a couple months back.
I couldn't possibly recommend this movie any more. It is a must see, people! This movie totally rocked!

Definitely, Maybe
Ryan Reynolds stars as Will Hayes, a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love. Will's story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the Clinton campaign. For Maya, Will relives his past as an idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women. Will hopelessly attempts a "PG" version of his story for his daughter and changes the names so Maya has to guess who is the woman her father finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Is she his longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April (Isla Fisher)? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)? As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad's romantic puzzle, she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy.
This was a very cute date movie. I'm a big fan of Ryan Reynolds and his delivery and facial expressions are just as good as always in this movie. I also really enjoyed the chemistry between him and Abigail Breslin as his daughter. They were awesome together. This movie kept making me think how lucky I am to have the future steppie Stinka in my life. The only real knock that I would make against this movie was that it was a tad too long. The movie was around 2 hours long and could have easily been closer to an hour and a half. Other than that, this was a really good romantic comedy with well developed and likable characters.
I'd recommend that people check this movie out. Its a good date movie.

Charlie Bartlett
Anton Yelchin stars as Charlie Bartlett, who has been kicked out of every private school he ever attended. And now that he's moved on to public school, he's simply getting pummeled. But when Charlie discovers that the kids who surround him – the outcast and the popular alike – are secretly in desperate need, his entrepreneurial spirit takes over. Hanging up his shingle in the Boys' restroom, Charlie becomes an underground, not to mention under-aged, shrink who listens to the private confessions of his schoolmates, and makes the imprudent decision to hand out the pills he's proffered from his own psychiatric sessions. Meanwhile, at home, Charlie keeps charming his way out of an inevitable confrontation with his adoring but utterly overwhelmed mother Marilyn (Hope Davis). Then, Charlie Bartlett makes his big mistake: falling in love with the beautiful and bold daughter (Kat Dennings) of the school's increasingly disenchanted Principal (Robert Downey, Jr.), who is hot on his trail. As Charlie Bartlett's world and fledgling psychiatric practice unravel, he begins to discover there's a whole lot more to making a difference than handing out pills.
I really don't know what to think of this movie. I was starting to like it after accepting it as a Ferris Bueller wannabe for the prozac generation. Then, it became this high school drama about relationships with parents. Its not that it was horrible. I found it being watchable, but it definitely would have been much better off choosing what kind of a movie it wanted to be. If it would have chosen the former - it probably could have been a really funny movie.
I'm not sure that I would recommend people going out of their way to rent this. Again - its not a bad movie. Its just kind of there. Just wait until its on cable.

10,000 B.C.
In a remote mountain tribe, the young hunter D'Leh (Steven Strait) has found his heart's passion - the beautiful Evolet (Camilla Belle). But when a band of mysterious warlords raid his village and kidnap Evolet, D'Leh leads a small group of hunters to pursue the warlords to the end of the world to save her. As they venture into unknown lands for the first time, the group discovers there are civilizations beyond their own and that mankind's reach is far greater than they ever knew. At each encounter the group is joined by other tribes who have been attacked by the slave raiders, turning D'Leh's once-small band into an army. Driven by destiny, the unlikely warriors must battle prehistoric predators while braving the harshest elements. At their heroic journey's end, they uncover a lost civilization and learn their ultimate fate lies in an empire beyond imagination, where great pyramids reach into the skies. Here they will take their stand against a tyrannical god who has brutally enslaved their own. And it is here that D'Leh finally comes to understand that he has been called to save not only Evolet but all of civilization.
This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Unfortunately - it was not meant to be funny in any way. It was total garbage and I found myself laughing out loud at how absurdly ridiculous it was. My biggest problem was that they were speaking regular English. In 10,000 B.C.? As if that wasn't bad enough - the dialogue was horrible and the acting right there with it. This movie was as a fellow blogger put it the anti-Apocolypto. The only way that I made it through to the end of the movie was by telling myself that it was actually a spoof of Apocolypto and laughing about how crappy it was. Even the special effects couldn't save this movie. There were three "creature" encounters in this movie and I didn't find myself the least bit awed by the CGI animals. Roland Emmerich made Independence Day back in 96 I believe and has amounted to pretty much nothing since then.
I wouldn't reccomend anyone waste their time on this steaming turd. It was truly a waste of two hours of my life that I can never get back.

Superhero Movie
The creators of The Naked Gun and Scary Movie are back with the comedy Superhero Movie. Meet Rick Riker. He's young, he's cool and he's got superpowers. Now, if he only knew how to use them... but the world is in danger and no one is safe when Zucker and the gang - headed by the hilarious cast of Drake Bell, Leslie Nielsen, Tracy Morgan, Pamela Anderson, Regina Hall and many others - take aim at some of the biggest blockbusters of our time including Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, to name a few.
As a big fan of spoof movies, this one is a breath of fresh air with some actual laughs when compared to the recent offerings of Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet The Spartans. This movie was essentially a spoof of Spider-Man with a visit to the school in X-Men, a couple of Fantastic Four characters showing up in costume and the childhood death of parents a la Batman. It stuck close to the movies it was spoofing and didn't stray too far out of control. It was by no means a hysterical movie or a great movie. However, it was definitely watchable and had some pretty good laughs mixed in.
I'd recommend anyone who was interested in checking this out go ahead and do so. Its not a must see by any means, but worth the rental if its your cup o tea.

In Bruges
For hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), Bruges could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in Bruges for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray's often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city. But the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor (Jordan Prentice) shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë (Clémence Poésy), who may have some dark secrets of her own. And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of comic and surprisingly emotional consequences.
Colin Farrell was hysterical in this film. His character was so completely and uncaringly obnoxious that he had me crying from laughing at certain times. The movie is very weird at times and had some pretty violent moments, but I still found it to be hysterical. Its one of those movies that doesn't necessarily have a straight story and is just about how badly things spiral out of control for these two guys and the people they meet along the way. However, Colin Farrell's interaction with these people and situations totally makes this movie.
I'd recommend everyone checking this one out on video. It really should have been released wider when it was in theaters.

The Spiderwick Chronicles
From the series of books by the same name comes The Spiderwick Chronicles. It is a fantasy adventure for the child in all of us. Peculiar things start to happen the moment the Grace family (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallory and their mom) leave New York and move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate what's really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.
This is one of those great fantasy type movies. I love movies like this when you get a chance to view in to this made up world of fairies, goblins, and magic. I had read the books and really looked forward to seeing this movie. I was worried that my expectations were too high and I was inevitably going to end up disappointed. However, I was not at all. I think they did a great job of capturing the world and characters created in the book and that Freddy Highmore (playing both Jared and Simon) has continued on his path of what could be an amazing acting career. The only real knock that I can make against this movie is that there are some parts that are way too scary for really little kids seeing this. The main bad guy turns in to a huge goblin and a massive snake at certain points. I was glad that Stinka was past that waking me up in the middle of the night because she was scared phase at certain points during the movie so be warned parents of young ones.
I would fully recommend people checking this movie out. Its a great trip to another world.

Under The Same Moon
Under the Same Moon tells the parallel stories of nine-year-old Carlitos and his mother, Rosario. Unexpected circumstances drive both Rosario and Carlitos to embark on their own journeys in a desperate attempt to reunite. Along the way, mother and son face challenges and obstacles but never lose hope that they will one day be together again.
This is one of those textbook you see the trailer - you see the movie films. That's not to say that its not a watchable movie. The problem though is that I didn't necessarily find it enjoyable. It was just kind of there. I didn't find myself emotionally attached to what was going on in any way. I'm sure that if anyone had gone through anything like this it might be the best movie ever to them, but I found myself not caring and then getting mad at myself for possibly being insensitive because of my lack of caring. It wasn't bad at all, but just didn't really pull me in.
With all of my babbling being said - I'd still recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys hardship dramas like this. I'm sure that you will find the movie much more intriguing than I did.

This is one of those formula comedies. You have pretty much seen the movie by watching the commercial. There are still some really big laughs though even if the movie did run a bit too long. I have always found Martin Lawrence to be hysterical. He played really well off of Mo'Nique, Mike Epps, and Michael Clarke Duncan as his family. The only really bad part about this movie was his fiancee. She was so annoying that I wanted to throw my soda at the screen every time she talked.
I'd recommend people checking this one out if they are looking for a laugh. Its nowhere near being a must see, but it might be worth the rental for you.

This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and probably a lock for the worst movie of 2008. WW and I didn't even make it to the end. God Bless her beautiful soul for throwing in the towel on the gigantic piece of dung 3/4 of the way through. It speaks volumes that she was willing to leave. She is an incredibly patient person and will usually fully commit to the movie unless it is beyond intolerable. This movie most definitely was. We waited for an hour and a half for this movie to decide where the hell it was going and it still never went anywhere. It just kind of circled the drain for what seemed like an eternity. It was honestly the worst collection of movie characters I've ever seen. Thank God I had no sharp objects on me or I might have stabbed myself in the eyes with it.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. Ever! Seriously. I wouldn't make my worst enemy suffer through this movie.

Witless Protection
Larry the Cable Guy returns for another comic misadventure as a small town sheriff who unwittingly gets involved in a high profile FBI case. During a routine day spent patrolling his small town, Larry witnesses a beautiful, high-class woman, Madeleine, being held against her will by four mysterious, black-suited men. Recognizing the opportunity to save the day, Larry "kidnaps" her, only to learn that Madeleine is actually a key witness in a high-stakes Chicago crime case and her captors are FBI agents assigned to protect her. Madeleine is furious. But Larry, who rightly suspects the agents are crooked and Madeleine is in danger, forces her on a harebrained trip to Chicago to solve the case himself. Together, the hilariously mismatched duo must grapple with angry FBI agents, quack doctors and Chicago high society in his funniest, most unpredictable adventure yet.
Why do they keep making Larry The Cable Guy movies? Why do I keep on renting them? Why did they keep making Pauly Shore movies? Why did I keep seeing those? Certain questions in life will probably never be answered. I think that these questions belong on the list. As for the movie . . . . . it was poop. If you remotely expected something else - you are a moron.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. Not even those of you out there with the must see every movie addiction that I have. Seriously. Save yourselves!!!

Funny Games
In this provocative and brutal thriller, a vacationing family gets an unexpected visit from two deeply disturbed young men. Their idyllic holiday turns nightmarish as they are subjected to unimaginable terrors and struggle to stay alive.
This movie was one hell of a mind screw. It makes you never want to answer your door again. Its not a horror movie in the sense that you are scared and jump out of your seat. Its just very disturbing to think about how something like this could really happen and just how creepy the two guys were. It was like watching two demented people torture a family but without the gore that has become so commonplace. It was more of the mental torture that we got to see and while it was incredibly well done - it was really screwed up. At one point the dude just starts talking in to the camera and addressing the viewer. Very creepy.
I'd recommend people checking this out. Its not an easy watch by any means just because of the subject matter but its a very well done psychological drama.

Be Kind Rewind
Be Kind Rewind is a comedy starring Jack Black as a loveable loser stuck in a life that's too small for his big dreams. But when he unintentionally erases all the tapes in a video store where his best friend works, he devises a plan to satisfy the store's few loyal customers by re-creating and re-filming every movie they decide to rent.
This movie started out great with the movie really channelling the best parts of Jack Black. The movie was quirky, silly, and totally out there. I loved watching him and Mos Def make home video versions of movies. Unfortunately, the movie took a serious turn and there was no way that I could even entertain the thought of taking this movie seriously. They should have just kept it silly and it would have been fine.
I'd recommend people checking this out for the first half of the movie. There were some really big laughs. Just turn it off once you start to get bored though because it really crashes and burns.

Jumper
A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between "Jumpers" and those who have sworn to kill them.
Let me just start by saying that Hayden Christiansen has officially become my least favorite actor in Hollywood. The guy is simply atrocious. He pretty much single handedly destroyed the Star Wars prequels and has consistently gotten worse with every movie he has been in since then. Jumper is no different. The other jumper in the movie with him was great and the effects were awesome. Unfortunately, that was it. As if Hayden didn't suck enough, this movie had to be graced with the presence of Samuel L. "I don't turn down an offer to be in any movie no matter how absurd it or my physical appearance in it will be" Jackson. What is the deal with him? The guy is a great actor with an awesome presence, but he keeps choosing to be in these giant turds that are offered up to him. Samuel, please fire your agent and look in to a little thing called selectivity.
I wouldn't really recommend anyone bothering to check this out. The effects while cool are not nearly enough to help you get past the horrid acting.
